The relationship between the promoter and a masters- or doctoral candidate is both complex and important. A number of responsibilities are inherent in this relationship. The promoter’s responsibilities to the candidate include assessment of the candidate's ability, making knowledge and time available, providing feedback, setting standards and acting as a role model. The promoter also has responsibilities to the university concerned. The student is responsible for working independently and keeping to the predetermined working schedule.
