The author aims to define a broad concept of nursing in a futuristic perspective. Many variables will influence future health services and thus conceptualisation in nursing. These variables will also present tremendous challenges to the nursing profession. Some of the main variables are discussed, these include demographic growth, the changing health profile, the disease orientation of present health services and the increasing demand for services, future scientific and technological developments, the communication revolution and dehumanisation of health services. Despite the changes foreseen, it is not envisaged that the nurse will become redundant. She will remain as a mediator between the patient and technology.
