Psychiatric nursing is a specialised area of nursing practice which has a scientific base and in which the nurse uses herself as a therapeutic instrument in the implementation of the nursing process. This requires knowledge, self-knowledge, positive attitudes, therapeutic communication skills and the use of therapeutic nursing methods such as interviewing, group therapy and mental health counselling. Nurses who work in other areas of nursing can apply the above skills in their professional task, as well as at personal level.
