There is an urgent need for a scientific approach to the nursing of mental defectives. The patient’s full confidence must be won in order to stimulate interest and to obtain co-operation. The nurse sometimes feels frustrated because the patient, particularly at the beginning, seems to show little or no evidence of progress. The purpose of this study is to determine whether concentrated individual nursing attention can bring about results in a mental defective, bearing in mind that the potential of such a person must be investigated and taken into account with the aid of the skill and initiative of the nurse as therapeutic instrument.
