The purpose of this article is to provide brief overviews of distance education, the development of the University of South Africa (Unisa) and the Department of Advanced Nursing Sciences at this university. Doctoral programs as offered by this Department will be discussed in some detail. Distance education courses are offered throughout the world, but doctoral programs, especially in the field of Nursing Sciences, are not offered by all distance education institutions.
